Br. Kevin grew up in a small town in southern Maryland called Lusby. His mom was an art teacher and fostered his interest in art. She incorporated art into her children’s daily activities.
While in school Br. Kevin took art classes whenever possible. College was put on hold but art remained an important part of his life. During breaks from his job as a cook, Br. Kevin would sit and sketch.
Br. Kevin answered the Lord’s call and joined the monastery. In the summer of 2001, Abbot Hugh Anderson spoke with Br. Kevin about starting an art program at Benet Academy and encouraged him to finish his degree in Studio Art at Benedictine University. Br. Kevin also went on to get a teaching certificate for grades K-12 at North Central College. Currently, Br. Kevin is finishing his Master of Fine Art (MFA) degree at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Br. Kevin is a “jack of all trades” when it comes to art. He enjoys all forms but is most adept at drawing and print making. He likes to paint, preferring mostly oil and ink drawing. The medium he chooses helps to communicate an idea. He prefers to observe and work from real life. Br. Kevin says “Art is learning about the world -- learning how the world is visually presented, understanding it, translating it and communicating it.”
