On the morning of June 24, 2010,
the Solemnity of St. John the Baptist,
the monks of St. Procopius Abbey elected their tenth Abbot,

Abbot Austin

Born in Huntingdon, NY, on March 25, 1974, Gregory Murphy attended high school in New York and began studies in economics at the University of Chicago in 1992. Graduating with a B.A. in economics in December 1995, he entered St. Procopius Abbey the following June and professed vows on September 6, 1997. While studying philosophy at Benedictine University, he also taught math part-time at Benet Academy from 1997 to 2000. He then began theology at the Dominican House of Studies, earning an M.A. in theology in 2003 and a M.Div. and an S.T.B. in 2004. On July 3, 2004, he was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Daniel Kucera, O.S.B., fifth Abbot of St. Procopius Abbey. He then was appointed campus minister and religion teacher at Benet Academy where he served until 2006. Since that time, he has been working on a doctorate in theology at the University of Notre Dame.
